Stovetop Popcorn
My dad always use to make popcorn on the stove top, in a pan, with oil. He couldn’t cook much, but he made great popcorn. That’s because making great popcorn is super easy on the stove top. No need for microwave bags or an air popper. You can use a couple different types of oil, really any oil that will take high heat will work OK. But if you want it to taste and smell like movie theater popcorn use Coconut Oil.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil or extra-virgin olive oil
- ½ cup popcorn kernels, divided
- Salt, to taste
INSTRUCTIONS
- In a large, heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat, heat the oil for a couple minutes. You can test by adding 2 kernels, lid it and wait for them to pop. In the meantime, place a large serving bowl near the stove so it’s ready when you need it.
- Once the oil is heated (or the 2 kernels pop), carefully add the remaining popcorn kernels.
- Continue cooking until the popping sound slows to about one pop per every few seconds. (If the popcorn tries to overflow the pot, just tip the upper portion of popcorn into your bowl and return it to the heat.)
- Remove the lid and dump the popcorn into your serving bowl. Sprinkle the popcorn with a couple pinches of salt, to taste, and any other topping you would like. Toss the popcorn and serve immediately.
